Singaporeans’ craze with Hello Kitty

Hello Kitty remains a well loved icon which many will queue up for hours for. For some it’s a keepsake and for others, it’s to resell for a higher value online. In January 2000, Singaporeans were struck with Hello Kitty fever at McDonald’s. Thousands of people would turn up to buy the toys with the Extra Value Meals, with crowds forming as early as sunrise, and in some instances, the night before. McDonald’s were still releasing Hello Kitty in 2014 when they were already online, and guess what? Their website would crash.

Crazy right? Well at least they’re making most of their farewell. Knowing that Hello Kitty fans will probably be crazy for their collectibles, the cafe is choosing a more gradual departure and celebrating the goodbye instead of immediately bringing down its shutters.
