It’s Syawal everyone! A month of trying to balance glorious delicious open house food during the weekends, and controlling what you can eat during the rest of the week while you’re at work. After houses and houses of rendang, ketupat, lemang, pulut, sambal udang, sayur lodeh, you’re just totally done with Raya food and crave for something else. We’ve heard many times from our friends of other faiths that Ramadan is a great time for us to lose weight as we don’t eat from dawn to dusk. Believe me when I say we can gain that weight this month of Syawal. This year, since Hari Raya Aidilfitri falls on a Sunday, we get to binge for an extra day stuffing our faces with Ketupat and Rendang. Naturally, we get sick of all the good food and crave for something light and healthy once the holidays are over and as we head back to work over this week. While salads do help in getting rid of the post-raya food coma syndrome, I know some people who cannot stand the sight of leafy greens on their plate. So here are some suggestions for those who need to get over their post-Eid food coma syndrome without compromising on taste and appeal. Nutritionally balanced food does not need to be boring!

1. VXX Cooperative

Tucked away in a corner nearby the bustling street of Jalan Besar, VXX Cooperative is the perfect quiet respite from your hectic workday. Maintaining their old school charm with the original flooring of the shophouse kept, this cafe serves up amazing modern classics like the Porcini Mac n Cheese (porcini is a type of mushroom by the way). If you’re trying to stay away from all the meat you’ve feasted on during Raya, the Miso-Maple Salmon is perfect for you.

It’s barely been a week, but our new Miso-maple Salmon is such a hit! Served with butter asparagus & cous cous, it’s our favorite all-day dish rn! Remember we’re giving 10% off all mains until 24/06. Open 10am to 9pm Monday to Saturday! #comesitwithus #vxxcooperative

Since #youonlyliveonce, might as well nourish your body with amazing nutrients it needs and prep your body to be as healthy as it can be! YOLO serves up healthy dishes which may seem foreign to us foodie Singaporeans, but trust me when I say the food is amazingly well seasoned, flavoured and has everything to cater your preference. If you’re excited to get onto the quinoa (pronounced as kee-nu-ah) bandwagon, be sure to try the salmon quinoa patties as you build your own meal. If you want something familiar, try their Coconut Chicken with Brown Rice, or the Peranakan Veggie Curry. They seriously taste like your usual curry but is unbelievably light at the same time! One great thing about YOLO is that it has your fitness goals in mind. Choose from four fitness goals – Build, Shape Up, Energize and Glow – and you’re on your way to feeling and looking good.

6. LIMAA

When I’m in need of a fast and secret window shopping trip, I always head down to Haji Lane and Arab Street areas. Once I’m done feasting my eyes on clothes or knick knacks I don’t really need, I head over to one of the many eateries in the area. As of late, LIMAA has been a favourite thanks to their refreshing cold-pressed fruit juices and the all you can eat salad bar. The small and quaint space is an escape away from the noise and excitement of Haji Lane. I might say it’s quite zen and relaxing to just enjoy your fruit juice as you finish that book you’ve been reading.

Our bottles have stickers on them!! Find us at 51 Haji Lane!! Buy any 2 juices and get a home-made Lemonade complimentary!!

Fellow foodies like me would be thinking of what to have for lunch the day before. If you’re dreaming of your lunch hour a full 24 hours before, order one of the healthy and scrumptious lunch options on Grain’s app or website. While you can’t head down to a physical store, having Grain delivered straight to your office as you’re finishing that report your boss asked for is the icing on the cake. Spotlight: Pengat Durian at Katong Kitchen!

We haven't gotten the chance to explore the Marine Parade area much so when we discovered the elusive Katong Kitchen, we were pleasantly surprised. This lovely halal hotel buffet is hidden on the 4th floor of Village Hotel Katong.
