Along the stretch of North Bridge Road, you may have caught a sudden glimpse of an Indonesian restaurant snuggled in the midst of its fellow more prominent neighbours. This curious restaurant accentuated by its rustic decor with strung lightbulbs and ornately carved wooden decorations on its walls has actually travelled quite a distance in its journey to where it came to be now.
Founded in 2006, this Indonesian restaurant came about as a result of a certain lady’s desire to share her love for her ethnic cuisine – Javanese fare. Madam Indah first introduced her range of Surabaya cuisine at an eatery at the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore, after being inspired by a famous restaurant owned by a childhood friend back in the 1980s. She lovingly pooled beloved family recipes which she grew up on and engaged chefs from Indonesia who best understood the intricacies of Javanese cuisine the way she did, in order to bring these recipes to life.
A Sample of the Menu at Pondok Jawa Timur
What first began as Madam Indah’s wish to share the food reminiscent of her childhood has now captured the hearts of her customers. Today, this restaurant has since been passed down to Madam Indah’s lovely daughter, Aveline. We could see the influence Madam Indah has impressed upon her, making sure she could cultivate the same love for Javanese fare as she had before. Pondok Jawa Timur commits to using quality ingredients to ensure that the taste of the Indonesian food is well preserved – and we were so pleasantly surprised to have tasted just that!
If you can’t get to Arab Street and back to your Raffles Place office within the lunch hour, fret not. Pondok Jawa Timur also has an outlet at Raffles Place – a so much more convenient location for all you office workers! If the taste, description, and photos hasn’t yet rung a bell, perhaps you might remember an Indonesian restaurant at Far East Plaza that is now no longer there or maybe, there was a particular taste of Indonesian food that caught your taste buds at the Atrium some time back. Well , these are the very two locations that this restaurant used to be located at, before settling into their current location at North Bridge Road. So, it’s time to visit them if you were amongst those that were wondering where they went!

Despite being able to house only 30 – 40 patrons in one sitting, the good people behind Pondok Jawa Timur have proven to be versatile to be able to host several weddings in a year. After Jums checked out the place with us, she recommends that for those of you holding more modest weddings with a petite guest list, you might want to consider Pondok Jawa Timur as one of your options! The people behind the restaurant would be more than happy to listen to your needs, and see what they can do to help you out on your special day.
